Strengthening the immune system with water and vitamin C

The evenings and nights are slowly getting cooler. That’s why it can get a bit chilly on the way to work in the morning. It is therefore good to strengthen the immune system now. A balanced diet rich in vitamins, which also replenishes fluid reserves in good time, can make a good contribution to this. A perfect drinking combination for the fall is water with added natural vitamin C.

Total water requirement for the body

Scientists recommend that adults should drink around 1.5 to 2 liters per day. The German Nutrition Society (DGE) in Bonn also recommends an average of 1.5 liters. This amount should be increased in the case of heat, sport, physical work or illnesses with water loss. The DGE assumes a total water intake of 2,650 ml of water per day. This applies to an average adult between the ages of 19 and 50. The total water is made up of around 1,440 ml of drinks, around 875 ml of water from food and around 335 ml of so-called oxidation water. The latter is formed via metabolic processes in the body.

Water release and dry air

In a healthy body, the amount of water released is the same as the necessary intake of 2,650 ml. Around 1,440 ml of this water is excreted in the urine and around 160 ml in the stool. In addition, the body loses an average of around 550 ml of water through the skin and 500 ml through the lungs every day. In order for all processes in the organism to run smoothly, the water balance must be right. In the fall, the immune system can suffer from an imbalance of water. This is because the transition from warm to colder temperatures and the dry heating or fireplace air in offices or living rooms are particularly hard on the body. If the mucous membranes in the nose and mouth are dried out, viruses and bacteria can spread more easily and quickly.

Vitamin C the perfect plus for water

Sufficient water can make a small but significant contribution to supporting the immune system. This can be optimized by the intake of natural vitamin C from fruit and vegetables. An average male adult aged 19 and over should consume 110 mg of vitamin C per day, an average female adult 95 mg of vitamin C. Women and men who smoke have a higher vitamin C requirement. In this case, men should be supplied with 155 mg and women with 135 mg per day. A shot of freshly squeezed lemon or orange juice in drinking or mineral water is particularly popular. 100 g of orange juice provides an average of 45 mg of vitamin C. With lemon juice, this value is around 40 mg per 100 g.

The quickest and most effective way to naturally enrich water with vitamin C is to add sea buckthorn or acerola cherry juice. Sea buckthorn juice provides around 265 mg of vitamin C per 100 g, acerola cherry juice even provides at least 650 to 1,000 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. The latter is therefore the perfect plus when drinking water for the immune system. Nobody needs to be afraid of too much natural vitamin C, as excess amounts are excreted in the urine.

Tip on acerola water:

The acerola cherry is a true vitamin C miracle. As it is not native to Europe, acerola cherry juice can be purchased ready-made in health food shops, drugstores, organic food stores, organic supermarkets or supermarkets with a more extensive organic range. The most effective choice is 100% organic juice.
