We feel safe at home. However, according to available figures from 2015, this is only an apparent certainty. In 2015, 9,815 people lost their lives in accidents at home – almost 800 more than in the previous year. The most common cause of death is falls (80 percent), e.g. when cleaning windows or tripping over things lying around. Are we becoming increasingly reckless? The dangers lurking in the home are often not taken seriously. Windows are cleaned standing on swivel chairs, tiles are wiped by balancing more or less safely on the edge of the bathtub. The iron remains on the laundry when you look in the oven shortly after eating. You’re just too tired and exhausted and should really be lying on the sofa with your legs up. But a little cleaning is quick.

Lack of fluids:
Dangers where you wouldn’t expect them

After work, you quickly tidy up the apartment and take care of the chores so that you can start the weekend stress-free. Tired from a long day at work anyway and then perhaps not having drunk enough all day – not exactly the ideal conditions for tackling household chores.

The human body consists of around 65 percent water. This is involved in almost all bodily functions. If fluid is missing, the whole system suffers. Our brain, the organ with the highest energy consumption, consists of 80 percent water.

We should therefore consume between 1.5 and 2 liters of fluid a day, and more if we are particularly strenuous or in warmer temperatures.

If we drink too little, our body becomes dehydrated. Difficulty concentrating, tiredness, a longer reaction time and headaches are among the symptoms that occur relatively early in the event of a fluid deficiency. The feeling of being a little wobbly on your feet is also part of it. This is caused by the thickening of the blood due to a lack of fluids. The oxygen supply no longer functions adequately, the skull hums, we get weak knees.

Anyone who screws the bulb into the ceiling lamp in this state will fall off their chair before they know it. But forgetting to iron your shirt is also a risky business.

However, many sufferers do not associate complaints such as headaches and difficulty concentrating with a lack of fluids and start drinking anyway. The motto here should be: Wait and see and drink tea. Or at least a glass of water first.

Fit even after eight hours of work

To prevent this from happening in the first place, you should drink enough fluids in good time. If you feel thirsty, it’s too late, the body is already in a state of incipient dehydration. It is therefore better to get into the habit of drinking regularly throughout the day. If you find it difficult to remember to drink, it’s a good idea to set aside the amount you plan to drink for the day at work in the morning. So you just have to reach for the bottle in between. In addition, at the end of the day you can see whether your drinking target for the day has been reached or whether you need to top up before doing any more housework.

A healthy drink to achieve the recommended daily intake is mineral water, with or without carbon dioxide, depending on your taste. Without calories and free of additives or colorants, it is an optimal transport medium for vitamins and minerals in the body. If you prefer something more substantial, try juice spritzers with a ratio of one part juice to two parts water.

According to the latest findings, morning coffee in the office can also be counted as part of the daily intake. However, coffee should remain what it is: a stimulant to wake you up.

If you take a last sip from the bottle or a healthy fruit cocktail with your colleagues before you head home, you will arrive home well hydrated.

Drinking as a household helper

The consequences of drinking too little should not be underestimated. If you are dehydrated, you quickly lack the necessary concentration and mishaps happen that can have unpleasant consequences. It is therefore better to drink small amounts regularly throughout the (working) day to keep the body’s fluid balance in equilibrium. So you can really get going again at home.
