As summer draws to a close, you can always see the bright orange berries peeking out of the bushes – the sea buckthorn berries are ripe. They are not only beautiful to look at, but also healthy. The berries can be enjoyed as juice, tea, fruit spritzer or jam – in any case a real treat and rich in valuable ingredients.

The lemons of the north

Also known as the “lemons of the north” due to their high vitamin C content, the berries thrive best in full sunlight and sandy soil, which is why they grow most often in coastal regions. In Germany, the berry bushes are mostly found in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on the dunes of the Baltic Sea and on the associated islands. If you spend your autumn vacation there, you can’t miss the sea buckthorn. All souvenir stores sell sea buckthorn-related products, and these are not only useful on vacation. Vacations by the sea are particularly demanding on the body. Frequent time spent outdoors, a more or less stimulating climate, prolonged exposure to the sun or walks in the rain – this is where the berry with its valuable ingredients can support the body.

The first sip in the morning

Drunk pure as sea buckthorn juice, also known as mother juice, it is the perfect vital substance booster in the morning. Without us realizing it, our body also loses fluids at night through sweating and breathing. During sleep, that’s 35 grams of moisture per hour. This needs to be replenished in the morning so that you don’t start the day with a fluid deficit. If you drink a glass of sea buckthorn juice immediately after getting up, you replace the lost fluid and provide your body with healthy nutrients. Sea buckthorn juice contains vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K and provitamin A, as well as minerals, fruit oils and trace elements. The high vitamin C content helps to protect the skin from sunburn – especially in the fall, the sun’s radiance is underestimated due to the cooler temperatures. Sea buckthorn juice can be mixed throughout the day to make a spritzer – a tasty thirst quencher when combined with a well-balanced mineralized water. If you like it hearty, add a shot glass of sea buckthorn juice to your non-alcoholic wheat beer for a tangy drink. This makes it easy to reach the recommended daily intake of approx. 2 liters.

Warm drinking pleasure in orange

After a stormy walk on the beach or at home in the fall, hot sea buckthorn-orange-apple juice is a great way to warm up and prevent colds.

Sea buckthornFor a sea buckthorn-orange-apple juice you need:

0.1 liter pure organic sand cord juice
0.25 liters of good orange juice (or home-squeezed)
0.25 liter apple juice
1 tablespoon of cranberry syrup
3-5 tablespoons honey
(can be varied according to taste)
the juice of one lime
(alternatively some freshly squeezed lemon juice)

Pour the juices into a saucepan and carefully heat them to a just drinkable temperature (do not boil!). Then add the honey and cranberry syrup and stir until both have dissolved. Then season the juice with the lime or lemon juice.

Not just for drinking

But sea buckthorn is much more than just a delicious drink. It can be made into jam or liqueur, is a fine ingredient in many dishes and is even used in cosmetics. Sea buckthorn pulp oil and sea buckthorn seed oil are mainly used here. If you have already moisturized your skin well from the inside by drinking enough throughout the day and thus helped it to become more elastic and firm, you can put the icing on the cake with a fine sea buckthorn treatment. You can either use a ready-made skin care lotion or cream or add a few drops of sea buckthorn oil to your own skin care to enhance it and also benefit externally from the valuable ingredients of sea buckthorn.

An all-round healthy drink with sea buckthorn

Whether you drink it as pure juice or mix it with water, sea buckthorn as a drink is good for the body. As a high-quality source of vitamins, it supplies the body with fluids, awakens the spirits with its fine taste and warms when enjoyed hot. If you also want to do something good for your skin, pamper it with a little sea buckthorn oil in your skincare routine. So you drink yourself nice from the inside and can then enjoy the pampering program from the cream pot.
