Human skin is a true marvel. It protects the body from any external influences. It is also a sensory and excretory organ. The skin is often regarded as a mirror of the soul and the general state of health. It is easy to support the personal beauty and health of your skin by drinking enough fluids. Drinking water regularly can make a good contribution to this.

Human skin: protection and sensation

The medical term for the skin is cutis. Without this elastic and stretchy sheath, life would not be possible. The cutis covers the entire outer surface of the human body and thus delimits it from the outside world. It therefore fulfills an important protective function. It shields the organism from dangerous external factors. These can be, for example, pathogens, radiation such as sunlight, chemical substances or varying temperature influences. It also protects the body from dehydration. It consists of three layers: the epidermis, corium and subcutis. Together, all three layers can guarantee optimum protection. As the largest single organ in the human body, it houses the senses of cold and heat, pain and touch.

Water as a skin component

The skin consists of around 80 percent water. This is why its functioning is quickly negatively affected by a lack of fluids. Therefore, hydration from the inside is extremely important. This can also be seen if you look at the total fluid distribution in the body. Around a third of the total fluid is stored in the cutis. Depending on body size and fullness, an average adult’s skin covers a total area of up to 2 square meters. In order for the skin to function optimally, it is supplied with water and numerous nutrients and active substances via the blood. Scientists at the Charité in Berlin have discovered that drinking just 0.5 liters of water can improve blood circulation. The increased blood circulation activates the skin’s metabolism and thus also improves the oxygen supply.

Water works effectively

After drinking half a liter of tap water, an improvement in the skin can be seen after about 10 minutes. A research team at the Charité hospital in Berlin was able to demonstrate the effect of drinking on the skin even after this short time. It has been proven that better blood circulation, a more optimal oxygen supply and an increased skin metabolism can be measured. A more active metabolism in the skin optimizes the immune and protective function. It also supports the visible vitality and health of the skin. After all, skin can only look beautiful in the long term if it is supplied with sufficient water, nutrients and active ingredients. Water not only provides the skin cells with moisture, but also with volume. This has an effect on elasticity. The improved blood circulation gives it a pleasant rosy color. A lack of water dries out the skin. It quickly becomes cracked and rough and small wrinkles appear.

The cosmetics industry works with water-based moisturizers and lotions. Although these can optimize the appearance from the outside in the short term, the moisture depots in the skin must be replenished from the inside so that the skin remains healthy and beautiful. Drinking water regularly helps!
