In addition to food intake, the regulation of fluid balance is an elementary component of human physiology. The supply of food can be documented in a nutrition log. A so-called drinking protocol is intended for the intake of fluids.

Monitoring fluid intake is particularly important in nursing care, as people in need of care do not (or cannot) always drink enough.
In many cases, older people do not even realize that they are not drinking enough fluids.
This is why drinking protocols are often used by inpatient facilities or outpatient care services.
This provides an overall picture of fluid requirements or fluid deficiency.
Based on the protocols, measures can be taken after the evaluation to stabilize the fluid balance.
