By now, most of us have gotten the message: We need to drink, enough and the right thing! Our body is well hydrated if we drink around 1.5 to 2 liters a day, and more if it is warm or we are doing sport. What is the best thing to drink? Water, of course. Whether tap, spring, mineral or medicinal water – the quality of the water is crucial. Because only pure water is able to dissolve the nutrients from what we eat, transport them to the right places in the body and rid us of toxins and waste products.

Water comes out of the tap

Drinking healthily

and is just as suitable for consumption. Available at all times and as the best-tested food in Germany, tap water is a good thirst quencher that comes out of the tap for two cents a liter. But some lack pizzazz and flavor. If you mix a juice spritzer with tap water, it won’t fizz.

Tap water plus

If you like it with a little more content, go for table water. This is industrially processed tap water, enriched with brine or seawater, minerals and carbon dioxide. The mixing ratio is not regulated by law and is handled individually by the respective manufacturers. The labels of table water bottles may not contain any indication of geographical origin – but table water can be served from the tap in restaurants, which is prohibited for mineral water. However, the table water does not contain any real added value for the consumer, but it does for the manufacturer. Apart from the cost factor, the production and transportation of bottled water has a negative impact on the environment – drinking tap water is not just good for your wallet. This can be carbonated with the help of a water bubbler to enhance its quality. The quality that arrives at your home is guaranteed in Germany by the Drinking Water Ordinance, it is many times cheaper than table water and hardly pollutes the environment.

Spring water – bottled on site

Just like mineral water, spring water is naturally pure water from underground reservoirs and bottled directly at the source. However, unlike natural mineral water, spring water bottles may contain water from different sources. In contrast to mineral water, spring water does not require official approval, although the limit values for chemical ingredients specified in the Drinking Water Ordinance also apply here.

You can go to the trouble of lugging home bottles of spring water for its naturalness. However, tap water is better tested and monitored. In addition, spring water does not have to contain any minerals, so it does not provide any additional health benefits.

Mineral water gets what we need

Mineral water is extracted from protected underground deposits and has minerals dissolved out of it on its way through the rock. It is bottled at the source and its specific composition may only be slightly altered. For example, sulphur and iron may be removed, but carbon dioxide may be added. Natural mineral water is the only German foodstuff to be officially recognized.

Drinking mineral water is not only a quick and calorie-free way to quench your thirst, its mineral content also provides your body with healthy nutrients.

Almost all mineral waters contain calcium, which is an essential component of bones and teeth. Magnesium is particularly important for the function of muscle and nerve cells, as is potassium, which is also involved in the body’s fluid balance. Not forgetting sodium and chloride, known to us in combination as table salt and, in addition to its function in the interaction of nerves and muscles, also important for the acid-base balance.

You can find the respective composition on the label and can therefore drink healthy ingredients in the right doses.

Healing water works naturally

Confirmed effect and completely natural – this applies to medicinal water. With its particularly high content of vital minerals and trace elements, medicinal water is a proven natural remedy. A water may only be called medicinal water if it has preventative, soothing or healing properties due to its natural ingredients. It is approved by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM). Healing water is particularly suitable for people who want to gently support their health and do something good for themselves every day. It can protect against deficiencies or compensate for existing deficiencies.

However, medicinal water is not to everyone’s taste. Often slightly bitter or salty, you can taste what’s inside. Depending on their regional origin, healing waters differ in their composition and mode of action. Almost all healing waters can be drunk daily, but can also be used as a drinking cure. For example, healing waters rich in magnesium can support the treatment of exhaustion, headaches and cardiovascular problems, healing waters with silicic acid help to build and regenerate bones and cartilage, fluoride-rich waters strengthen tooth enamel, sodium-rich healing waters regulate the water balance and balance the acid-base balance.

There is currently around 35 different medicinal waters available on the market, with something to suit every taste and every need. Especially those who follow a vegan diet benefit from the mineral and trace element content of healing waters. Mixed with apple juice, medicinal water makes an ideal isodrink.

Water in variations

Water is life, drinking it is healthy. We have a wide range of options to quench our thirst and satisfy our daily fluid requirements in a healthy way, because not all water is the same. Whether from the tap, refined or naturally from various sources, not only are different tastes catered for, but health can also be supported, deficiencies prevented and illnesses gently cured.

Starting the day with a glass of water in the morning – according to your own taste and needs – is the first step towards a more conscious and healthier diet.
