As nature blossoms in spring and temperatures rise, more and more people are drawn out into the countryside. The number of joggers, skaters and cyclists increases with every blinking ray of sunshine. It is particularly important to remember to drink enough fluids for outdoor sports. There are many fitness drinks. But very few people know that so-called medicinal waters can also be used to increase vitality during leisure and sport.

Healing waters – valued for centuries

Healing water was already prescribed by doctors in ancient Roman times. The Bavarian priest and naturopath Sebastian Kneipp (1821-1897) described water as the safest of all remedies. His hydrotherapies are still widely used today. There are around thirty-five healing waters in Germany that are subject to strict scientific testing. These can be found not only in spas, but also bottled in beverage and food retailers. However, not all markets stock medicinal water and there are significant regional differences in the brands on offer. Every healing water tastes different. Each water also has its own specific effect. Medicinal water is considered a medicine and not a foodstuff. Medicinal waters may not be marketed without official authorization from the Federal Institute for Drugs.

The region determines the taste

Each healing water has a different character and a special benefit for your health. This depends primarily on the path of the water through the individual layers of rock in the respective region. Depending on the geographical location of the spring, the healing waters can therefore taste salty, bitter, metallic or earthy. Anyone expecting the rather inconspicuous taste of conventional mineral or drinking water will be surprised at first. Nevertheless, it is worth trying out a medicinal water that suits your requirements if you want to do something for your vitality in an uncomplicated way.

Advantages for sports enthusiasts

The composition of the rock layers not only affects the taste, but also the mineral composition and the healing effects. The latter can be very different. Magnesium-rich medicinal waters are particularly interesting for people who are active in sports. These waters can help with cardiovascular problems, optimize muscle function, prevent exhaustion and relieve headaches. Healing waters with a high sodium content help to regulate the water balance and maintain the acid-base balance in the body. Both factors are equally important for sportspeople. There are also healing waters with a high silica content. Above all, they support the connective tissue, bones and cartilage in the body. Calcium-rich healing waters are a great way to provide the body with this mineral in an uncomplicated way, especially for active vegans or people with osteoporosis.

Fit for spring and rich in magnesium

When jogging, hiking, walking, cycling or skating more often, magnesium-rich medicinal waters are particularly beneficial. The following sources, for example, contain over 100 mg of magnesium per liter:

Adelheidquelle, Dunaris, Ensinger Schiller Quelle, Gerolsteiner Heilwasser, Heppinger Extra, Römerbrunnen, St. Gero, Staatlich Bad Kissinger Rakoczy and Vulkania Heilwasser.

As the minerals in medicinal waters are present in dissolved form, they are easily and quickly utilized by the body. Pay attention to the information on the label for all medicinal waters. Due to certain healing effects on the metabolism or individual organs, some waters should only be drunk to a limited extent.

A healing water drinking tip: Healing waters taste too intense for the average palate. Try the water diluted with tap or mineral water. If you like it fruity, dilute the healing water a little with 100% apple juice.
