The organic boom has spread to more and more areas of life in recent decades. And that’s a good thing. Good for the environment and good for human health. Whether food, drinks, cosmetics, cleaning products, clothing, household items, pet food, office supplies, everyday items, bedding or table linen – organic products can now be found in many households. For a few years now, there have also been so-called organic mineral waters in Germany, which – compared to conventional mineral waters – still enjoy relatively little attention.

How can water be organic?

Isn’t water organic by nature? You may be asking yourself this question now. Unfortunately, the answer is NO. Of course, natural mineral water is a natural product. But naturalness cannot simply be equated with organic when it comes to certification. With organically certified mineral waters, it is not quite as easy to keep track of as with other organic beverages and foods. Their marketability is based on the
EU Organic Regulation
and in some cases according to the guidelines of organic farming associations such as demeter, Bioland or Naturland. In the case of organic mineral water, on the other hand, many social aspects and additional controls must be taken into account in addition to purely ecological requirements in order for the water to be labeled as such.

Water approval with 45 individual criteria

Drinking water in Germany is one of the most strictly controlled foods in the world. Organic mineral water can top this. For certified approval, a total of
45 individual criteria
must be fulfilled. All specifications are legally regulated in the guidelines for organic mineral water, which have their origins in organic farming. The quality standard is high, comprehensive and holistic. For the producer of organic mineral water, hundreds of individual tests are required to ensure that the organic mineral water meets the high requirements. These are divided into six different areas: Sustainability, naturalness, microbiological and chemical purity, transparent declarations and the demand for good food with a high nutritional value. The consumer therefore receives a very high-quality beverage that is comprehensively controlled.

Environmental protection: regional and active

Sustainability and naturalness are not just empty advertising claims when it comes to organic mineral water. They are the basis of the product. One aspect of environmental protection is the careful use of water in the region. The manufacturer must actively support the preservation of regional nature and the groundwater around the production site. On the other hand, the producing company must ensure that the mineral water is produced in accordance with specified environmentally friendly standards. You also have to strive for a very high product quality that stands out from other waters in terms of the flawlessness of the water. Chemical and microbiological purity are a matter of course. In addition, all organic water must be clearly and transparently labeled as such for the consumer.

More plus points

In addition to the environmental protection requirements, organic mineral water must also comply with social and fair standards. In addition, stricter limits apply to organic mineral waters than those prescribed by law for commercial mineral waters. Previously unconsidered substances in drinking and mineral water are also additionally monitored. In addition to sustainable and ecological corporate management, all production steps must be environmentally friendly. This applies to the water source as well as in production, packaging and transportation. The high level of quality assurance and its documentation is carried out according to detailed specifications.

Organic mineral water can therefore be classified as a good food with a high nutritional value and health-promoting properties. Due to the purity of the water, in the region of extraction, they provide a good vitality boost for the body and ensure that future generations can still drink water without worry.
