Healing springs?

Yes, because (medicinal) water is one of the oldest natural remedies we have. Even thousands of years ago, people appreciated the positive effects of healing springs both externally and internally. Drinking therapy is therefore a central therapy in almost every spa treatment. However, it is not necessary to travel to a spa to enjoy medicinal water: A lot of healing waters are available commercially, although some are only available regionally. Nevertheless, everyone can buy the healing water that suits them.

Healing water – what is it?

Healing water is characterized by the fact that it comes from a deep underground water source. It is bottled directly at the source and is not chemically treated. Only iron can be removed, carbon dioxide removed or added. Healing water is rainwater that has penetrated the layers of rock and is enriched with minerals that are highly bioavailable. Therefore, another important criterion for medicinal water is its high content of minerals and trace elements, namely at least 1 gram per 1 liter of water.

There are currently around 60 approved medicinal waters in Germany, around 35 of which are bottled and available in well-stocked grocery stores.

Medicinal water the natural remedy as a medicine

Healing water is considered a medicinal product in Germany. Thanks to their special ingredients, they can have a positive effect on health. They can prevent, alleviate and even cure diseases. Of course, these skills must be proven. For this reason, medicinal waters are subject to approval and are constantly subject to strict controls and monitoring. Only after extensive analytical, pharmacological, toxicological and clinical testing is approval granted by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM).

The various medicinal waters are distinguished by their particularly high content of one or more specific minerals and/or trace elements. Their effects and functions in the body are well researched, which is why the effects of medicinal waters are also well understood.

Health promotion through medicinal water

Drinking medicinal water is therefore good for your health. It can be taken daily as a support or specifically as a treatment. Side effects, such as too much, are generally not to be feared. Normal drinking water can therefore be easily replaced by medicinal spring water. One to two bottles a day for regular use or three to four bottles for a drinking cure of 4-6 weeks can help to alleviate or cure a health problem. Healthy people generally benefit from a good supply of minerals. This can be useful, for example, if there is an increased need after exercise. Vegans can also cover their nutritional requirements with appropriate healing waters.

Minerals and trace elements in natural healing water

The most important minerals and trace elements that are supplied by drinking medicinal water are calcium to strengthen the bones, magnesium for muscles and relaxation, fluoride to protect against tooth decay, the acid scavenger hydrogen carbonate, sulphate to aid digestion and sodium for fluid balance. Depending on the content of the healing water, it can be used for osteoporosis, heartburn, digestive complaints, gallbladder and liver problems, bladder inflammation and urinary tract infections, diabetes mellitus, lipometabolic disorders, gout or specific deficiency states. In general, it has a positive effect on regulating the acid-base balance and supports a good supply during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Which healing water is the right one?

The label will tell you which healing water is the right one for you. It must contain indications for use, contraindications, possible side effects and interactions as well as recommended dosages. The taste of some healing waters may take some getting used to: depending on the variety, it can taste slightly bitter or salty.
